Nobel's Peace Prize

The First 100 Years

Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901. Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896, left his fortune to fund prizes to

"those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind."

As well as prizes for physics, chemistry, medicine and literature (and, later, economics), one was to be for Peace.

Winners today receive 10 million Swedish Crowns (£650,000), an original artwork diploma and a medal inscribed:

"Pro pace et fraternitate gentium". ("For the peace and brotherhood of humankind.")

This exhibition tells the story of the Nobel Peace Prize and gives the background to some of the winners.

Question: The 20th Century was the most violent in human history; has the Nobel Peace Prize made any real difference for peace?
