The Aims of the Peace Prize
Nobel stated in his will that the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Nobel's other prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, but Nobel wanted a committee of five people chosen by the Norwegian Parliament [Storting] to award the Peace Prize. Committee members tend to be public figures from the arts, business, religion, and former politicians.
The Awarding Process Every autumn the Nobel Committee sends 5,000 letters to people entitled to nominate. Nominations are made by 1 February and a shortlist drwan up. Each year over 100 candidates are nominated. Up to three winners are allowed. The winner is announced in October, with the award ceremony in Oslo Town Hall in December. |
