John Boyd Orr

(1880 - 1971)

John Boyd Orr was a pioneer in world nutritional studies and the founding director (1945-1948) of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). He strongly argued that nutrition is essential for international peace and unity. A highly practical administrator, he supported international co-operation in food and agriculture. In particular he proposed a world food board to maintain an international granary and to lend funds for emergency food purchases and agricultural development.

Boyd orr also advocated world government. In 1945, he was elected president of the National Peace Council and in 1949 became president of the new World Union of Peace Organisations.

"We must conquer hunger and want, because hunger and want in the midst of plenty are a fatal flaw and a blot on our civilisation. They are one of the fundamental causes of war."

John Boyd Orr, 1945
