The Next 10 Years

Nobel Peace Prize winners do not restrict their concerns to the area for which they won their prize. All living winners have issued a unique appeal for An International Decade for a culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World (2001-2010).

Objects of the appeal include:

  • reducing the suffering of children
  • building a culture of nonviolence

In order to achieve this:

  • the United Nations General Assembly should promote the Decade, and set up a UN University in Costa Rica (the only state to have abolished its armed forces)
  • nations should teach the practice of peace and nonviolence in all schools and colleges
  • national and local governments across the world should set up their own Commissions for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence

The 1st objective of the UN's "to save succeding generations from the scourge of war" - UN Charter

"Since wars begin in the minds of human beings, it is the minds of human beings that the defences of peace must be constructed." - UNESCO Constitution (preamble)

"Every nation has its illustrious military academies. Why are there so few, if any, schools, universities, laboratories or institutes that teach not the virtue of peace, but also the art of winning it and preserving it otherwise than with the instruments of war - armaments?" - Elie Wiesel

"If we are to reach peace and if we are to carry on a real war against war we shall have to begin with children." - Gandhi, 1931
