2007 Autumn Lectures

Education for Global Justice

Education for Global Justice, an informal group of residents in Ilkley and the neighbouring towns of West and North Yorkshire, is arranging five seminars from November 3 to December 1.

  • 3 November: 'Burma: Life Under a Dictatorship' Burmese activists in the U.K. speak of life under the military regime. In association with the Burma Solidarity Campaign U.K.and Karen Community Association, Sheffield
  • 10 November: 'Who Is A Global Citizen' Stephen Coleman, Director of Research at the Institute of Communication Studies, Leeds University, begins this talk as a series of planned lectures on the whole issue of citizenship
  • 17 November: 'Propaganda, the Media and Wars' The speaker, Phil Taylor of Leeds University, is leading international expert in the study of propaganda, especially with his definitive work,'Munitions of the Mind: a history of propaganda from the ancient world to the present day'
  • 24 November: 'The United States and the War on Drugs - All Poppy?' Julia Buxton of the Peace Studies Department at Bradford University and visiting professor at the George Washington University, USA, has just written a book on the international drugs economy and will speak on it
  • 1 December: 'Zapatistas: Mexico's Anti-Globalisation Rebellion' Paul Chatterton of Leeds University Geography Department,the speaker,has years of field research experience among the Zapatista rebels of Mexico and has put together the pioneering post-graduate studies programme on Activism and Social Change at Leeds University
