16 Jan 08 - Taking Soundings

A new political discussion group for Leeds

Feeling in need of some thoughtful, non-sectarian, political and cultural conversation? Some Leeds-    based readers of the journal Soundings are proposing to start a discussion group stimulated by articles published in this journal.

Our founding meeting is on Wednesday 16th January 2008 at 6 pm. The event is free and the meeting is open to all.  If there is sufficient interest a working group will be formed to plan further discussions.

For our first event, Zygmunt Bauman, the internationally renowned sociologist, will speak on ‘Has the  left a future?’ – based on his contribution to the Soundings debate on the future of socialism.  A copy on PDF can be sent to you via email.

The meeting will take place in the Old Broadcasting House, Leeds Metropolitan University. This is the building on Woodhouse Lane formerly occupied by the BBC.  Its postcode is LS1 3HE. If you need further directions or have any other queries contact one of the people listed below.

Soundings was founded in 1995 by Stuart Hall, Doreen Massey and Michael Rustin.  It is currently edited by Jonathan Rutherford.  It publishes radical commentary on global issues in an accessible style, combining analysis with poetry and photos.

Soundings appears quarterly at an annual subscription of £35 (but with special offers for new subscribers). Its web address is

We look forward to seeing you on 16th January.
